Paying for an AC replacement in Dallas
Compare every payment option on the total you will pay, not the monthly figure. Ask whether the financed price matches the cash price, whether a promotion is deferred interest, and whether the loan puts a lien on your home. Subtract only rebates you have confirmed: the federal 25C credit ended for systems placed in service after 2025, and utility incentives in DFW are paid through participating contractors.

What you are paying for
Published 2026 DFW ranges for a 3-ton AC-only replacement run $5,500–$16,500; full systems and heat pumps run higher. Every figure and source is on the cost guide. The payment question is separate from the price question, and mixing the two is how a good price becomes an expensive loan.
acinstallationdallas.com does not arrange, recommend or earn anything from any lender. The national picture on HVAC financing is on our sister site, HyreHVAC; this page covers what is specific to paying a Texas contractor for a Dallas install.
Three numbers to get in writing
The cash price. The financed price. The total of all payments over the loan. If any of the three is missing, the offers cannot be compared.
The usual ways to pay
| Option | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cash or savings | Pay on a schedule tied to the work | Deposit size; final payment after inspection |
| Contractor-arranged financing | A third-party lender pays the contractor; you repay the lender | Is the financed price higher than cash? Who is the lender? |
| Promotional “no interest” plan | Often a store-style credit line | Deferred interest vs true 0% |
| Credit card | Fast, but usually a high rate | Card APR and any surcharge |
| Home equity loan or line | Secured by the house | Closing costs; the house is collateral |
| Personal loan | Unsecured; from a bank or credit union | APR, origination fee, term |
None of these is right for everyone. A credit union personal loan may beat a contractor plan; a contractor plan may beat a card. The only reliable comparison is the total cost on the same system and scope.
Why the term matters more than the rate
The table shows the arithmetic for a hypothetical $10,000 balance. It is not an offer or a typical rate; it shows how term and rate change the total.
| Loan | Monthly payment | Total paid | Interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% APR, 60 months | $167 | $10,000 | $0 |
| 7.99% APR, 60 months | $203 | $12,163 | $2,163 |
| 9.99% APR, 60 months | $212 | $12,745 | $2,745 |
| 9.99% APR, 120 months | $132 | $15,851 | $5,851 |
| 17.99% APR, 60 months | $254 | $15,233 | $5,233 |
Doubling the term from 60 to 120 months at the same rate lowers the payment but roughly doubles the interest. A low monthly figure on a long term is the easiest way to overpay for an AC.
Deferred interest: the promotion to read twice
The CFPB explains that under a deferred-interest promotion, if any of the promotional balance is unpaid when the period ends, interest back to the purchase date is added; a true 0% offer charges interest only from the end of the promotion. The wording “no interest if paid in full” signals deferred interest.
True 0% for 18 months
Pay it off in 18 months: no interest. Balance left at month 19: interest starts on what is left, from then on.
“No interest if paid in full in 18 months”
Pay it off in 18 months: no interest. Any balance left: interest from the purchase date is added, on the whole history of the balance.
- Ask the contractor which kind the promotion is, and read the lender’s terms yourself.
- Divide the balance by the promotional months, round up, and set up that payment, not the minimum.
- Note the end date. A late payment can end the promotion early.
Texas rules that protect you
- Three-day cancellation. Under Texas Business and Commerce Code §601.051, a consumer may cancel a consumer transaction until midnight of the third business day after signing, where the sale was solicited and agreed somewhere other than the merchant’s place of business and the price is over $25.
- Homestead liens. For a lien on a homestead, Texas requires work and materials to be contracted for in writing, with the consent of both spouses if the owner is married, before the work starts. If a financing or installation contract would put a lien on your home, read it before signing and ask whether the spouse’s signature is required.
- The contract itself. In Texas, labor to repair or remodel residential property is not taxable; the materials are. Your invoice can be lump-sum (tax built into the contractor's material cost) or separated (tax shown on the materials line). Both are normal. The TDLR license number and consumer notice belong on the proposal and invoice; see the contract checklist.
A lien is a different kind of debt
Unsecured debt that goes unpaid hurts your credit. Debt secured by a lien on the house can, in the worst case, affect your home. Know which one you are signing.
Deposits and the payment schedule
- Deposit. Ask what it covers (usually ordering equipment) and whether it is refundable if the job does not proceed.
- Progress payment, if any. Tie it to a visible milestone, such as equipment set.
- Final payment. Tie it to start-up, your walkthrough and a passed city inspection.
- Paperwork at handover. Permit number, AHRI certificate, warranty registration confirmation; see what to inspect after installation.
Paying the full price before the inspection removes your leverage if something needs fixing.
Rebates that still lower the bill in 2026
- The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) applied to qualifying property placed in service before 31 December 2025. It is not available for a system installed in 2026.
- Oncor’s 2026 Home Energy Efficiency Standard Offer Program pays incentives to registered, approved energy efficiency service providers, who distribute them to the host customer. The dollar amount is not final until Oncor approves the provider’s production report. Oncor accepts 2026 production reports from 14 January 2026 until 6 p.m.
- Atmos Energy’s Mid-Tex appliance rebate program, running 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 for its Mid-Tex residential customers, pays $300 for an ENERGY STAR gas furnace rated 90% AFUE or higher and $350 for 95% AFUE or higher. Applications close 12 months after purchase or installation.
- City utilities run their own programs. Details and dates for Oncor, Garland, Denton and CoServ are on Dallas AC rebates by utility.
Because Oncor’s incentive flows through the contractor, ask how it appears on your invoice: as a line credit, a later payment, or built into the price. Get it in writing; the manual says the amount is not final until Oncor approves the contractor’s report.
Before you sign: a payment checklist
- Cash price and financed price for the same system, in writing.
- Lender name, APR, term, monthly payment and total of payments.
- Promotion type: deferred interest or true 0%, and the end date.
- Any lien on the home, and whether a spouse must sign.
- Deposit amount, refund terms and the payment schedule.
- Rebates: which program, who files, how it shows on the invoice.
- Cancellation window and how to exercise it.
Line up the quotes themselves in the quote comparison tool first, so you are financing the right job.

Questions
Is contractor financing a bad idea?
Not necessarily. It can be convenient and competitive. Ask whether the financed price is the same as the cash price and compare the total of payments with a bank or credit union loan.
What does “no interest if paid in full” mean?
It usually signals a deferred-interest promotion: if any balance remains at the end, interest from the purchase date is added. A true 0% offer charges interest only from the end of the promotion.
Is there a federal tax credit for a new AC in 2026?
No. The 25C credit applied to qualifying property placed in service before 31 December 2025.
Can I cancel an AC contract in Texas?
If the sale was solicited and agreed away from the merchant’s place of business, such as at your home, and is over $25, Texas law gives you until midnight of the third business day after signing.

- Tell us about the job. Service, ZIP, property and timing. The form says right away if your ZIP is outside the area.
- We check the license first. Requests go only to contractors whose TDLR air conditioning license we have matched on the state register. None is signed yet: if no checked contractor covers your ZIP, we email you and say so.
- Compare what comes back. Line the written quotes up in the quote-comparison tool.
No cost and no obligation. We are a publisher, not a contractor. Partner contractors will pay us for introductions; none is signed yet. How that works.
