Replacement
Should you replace the AC and furnace together?
Replace both together when the furnace is near the end of its life, cannot support a matched coil, or would need work within a few years anyway. Published 2026 DFW figures put an AC plus gas furnace at $6,000–$13,800 and a full system at $8,000–$16,000, against $5,500–$16,500 for a 3-ton AC alone. If the furnace is young and sound, keeping it is usually reasonable.

Why the two are linked in most Dallas houses
In the typical DFW split system the gas furnace sits in the attic or a closet, and the AC’s indoor coil sits on top of it. The furnace blower moves the air for both heating and cooling. So when the AC is replaced, the new coil has to fit the furnace cabinet, and the furnace blower has to move the right amount of air for the new system.
That is the whole reason this question comes up. An outdoor unit can be installed in the Southeast only if at least one coil-only combination of that model meets the regional standard; a blower-coil rating alone does not qualify it. A certified rating belongs to a matched combination, and the blower is part of what makes the combination perform.
The short rule
Same age, same failure risk, same crew on the same day: replace together. Furnace young, sound and compatible with the new coil: keep it, and get that compatibility in writing.

Show the data table
| Item | Range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 3-ton AC only (DFW) | $5,500–$16,500 | Outdoor unit + coil, existing ducts; DFW sources |
| AC + gas furnace (Dallas) | $6,000–$13,800 | HVACProjectCost.com, Dallas page, page dated 2026-08-02 |
| Full system (DFW) | $8,000–$16,000 | HVAC Services Pro, DFW installation guide, page dated 2026-03-06 |
| Heat pump, ducted (DFW) | $6,500–$14,500 | Replaces AC and furnace; two DFW sources |
| Furnace alone (national) | $4,000–$10,000 | Budget Heating furnace guide; national |
The overlap between the AC-only row and the full-system rows is the point. Replacing both at once costs more in total than replacing the AC alone, but much less than doing the AC now and the furnace as a separate job later, because the second visit repeats the labor, the permit and the coil-to-furnace transition.
National figures for the furnace alone ($4,000–$10,000) and for a furnace plus 3-ton AC ($10,500–$13,500) are from a national guide and are shown only as context. The DFW published adder for replacing the furnace or air handler at the same time as the AC is +$1,000–$4,000, on the cost guide.
Replace both, or keep the furnace?
| Your furnace | Usual answer | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Same age as the AC, original to a 1990s–2000s house | Price both together | Is the heat exchanger inspected and documented? |
| Under about 10 years, no repairs, coil fits | Keep it | Can the new coil and the blower be certified as a match? |
| Needs a repair now (inducer, control board, igniter) | Price both ways | What does the repair cost against the full-system increment? |
| Undersized or oversized for the house | Replace with the AC | What did the Manual J heating load show? |
| You are considering a heat pump | Price a heat pump and dual fuel | Can a heat pump coil sit on this furnace? |
ENERGY STAR says to consider replacement when a heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old, and that a correctly installed high-efficiency unit can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs. ENERGY STAR’s 10-year marker is about AC and heat pumps; furnaces in Dallas run fewer hours a year than ACs, so age alone is weaker evidence for the furnace than for the AC.
Three ways to replace “both”
AC + new gas furnace
Like for like. Keeps gas heat, new matched coil and blower. If you are an Atmos Mid-Tex customer, a 90%+ AFUE ENERGY STAR furnace can qualify for Atmos’s rebate.
Heat pump + air handler
All-electric. One outdoor unit does both jobs, with electric backup heat. Published DFW band $6,500–$14,500. Check the panel; see the heat pump cost guide.
Dual fuel pairs a heat pump with a new or existing gas furnace. It is the middle path when you want gas for the coldest nights. The trade-offs are in heat pump vs gas furnace in North Texas.
What to check on the furnace before deciding
- Age and model number. The serial number on the data plate usually encodes the year; ask the contractor to read it.
- Heat exchanger. Ask for a documented inspection. A cracked heat exchanger is a replace-now finding.
- Blower. Can it deliver the airflow the new coil needs? Ask whether it is single-speed or variable-speed.
- Cabinet width. The new coil must fit or need a transition; ask who builds the transition and how it is sealed.
- Venting. A switch from an 80% to a 90%+ furnace changes venting and adds a condensate drain.
- Sizing. Ask for the heating load from the Manual J, not just the cooling load.
Rebates and paperwork for a full replacement
- Atmos Energy’s Mid-Tex appliance rebate program, running 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 for its Mid-Tex residential customers, pays $300 for an ENERGY STAR gas furnace rated 90% AFUE or higher and $350 for 95% AFUE or higher. Applications close 12 months after purchase or installation.
- Oncor’s 2026 Home Energy Efficiency Standard Offer Program pays incentives to registered, approved energy efficiency service providers, who distribute them to the host customer. The dollar amount is not final until Oncor approves the provider’s production report. Ask whether the contractor participates. Details by utility: Dallas AC rebates.
- The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) applied to qualifying property placed in service before 31 December 2025. It is not available for a system installed in 2026.
- In Texas, labor to repair or remodel residential property is not taxable; the materials are. Your invoice can be lump-sum (tax built into the contractor's material cost) or separated (tax shown on the materials line). Both are normal.
Keep the documents together
The AHRI certificate, the furnace AFUE sheet, the permit number and both manufacturers’ warranty registrations belong in one folder. Rebate programs and warranty claims ask for them.
What a full-system quote should show
- Model numbers for the outdoor unit, the coil and the furnace (or air handler).
- The AHRI certificate number for the matched combination.
- Furnace AFUE and input Btu/h; AC SEER2 and capacity.
- Venting, gas line and condensate work, stated plainly.
- Ductwork transitions and any sealing.
- Thermostat: reused, replaced, or upgraded.
- Permit (mechanical, plus gas if the city requires it) and who pulls it.
- Removal of old equipment and refrigerant recovery.
Put two or three of these side by side in the quote comparison tool and check each license on the TDLR lookup.
Two hypothetical Dallas houses
A. 2002 Frisco tract house. Say the original 3-ton AC has failed and the furnace is the same age. Both are past their likely service life, the coil sits on the furnace, and a second visit for the furnace later would repeat the labor. Price the full system ($8,000–$16,000 published DFW) against a heat pump ($6,500–$14,500).
B. Lake Highlands house with a 2019 furnace. Say the AC failed but the furnace was replaced six years ago after a repair. Keeping it is reasonable if the contractor confirms the new coil and the furnace blower form a certified match. The AC-only range ($5,500–$16,500 for 3 tons) is the relevant one.

Questions
Do I have to replace my furnace when I replace my AC?
No. If the furnace is in good shape and the new coil and blower can be certified as a matched combination, it can stay. Ask for the AHRI certificate for the combination.
How much does a new AC and furnace cost in Dallas?
Published 2026 DFW figures run $6,000–$13,800 for an AC plus gas furnace (HVACProjectCost.com) and $8,000–$16,000 for a full system (HVAC Services Pro). These are third-party ranges, not quotes.
Is it cheaper to replace both at once?
The total is higher than an AC alone, but doing them on one visit avoids paying a second time for labor, the permit and the coil-to-furnace transition.
Should I switch to a heat pump instead of a new furnace?
Price it. A heat pump replaces both the AC and the furnace; the questions are backup heat for a freeze and whether your panel can carry it.
